And now for a little imagination...

Another month gone, but what a fab book! We enjoyed a lovely evening in Janet's home! Yeah! It's been a while since we had her lovely company, so it was a treasured evening indeed.  We had Jess missing for the first time-EVER...(and may it be the last!)  A good night had by those who came along though.  The book was great.  The characters were ones you just fell in love with and, even though it took some a little while to get their heads around with all the different letters flying around, it was a real to life glimps of war life with a dash humour through in for good measure.  It had some on the edge of their seat waiting to see how it would turn out. All round, well worth the read!

This month's book is one suggested by the lovely Laura.  Knife by R J Anderson
Synopis: Once upon a time, a fairy is born. She lives in an old oak tree at the bottom of a garden with the rest of the fairy folk. Never has she known a time when life hasn't been hard, with many dangers and much adversity. But when she becomes the Hunter of the group and learns to do battle in the outside world, her adventures really take off...
Don't read this book if you're expecting fairy dust - the last thing Knife is likely to wield is a magic wand...

A re-newed determination....

We had a lovely get together tonight. Thanks to Robyn for opening her home to us. I really enjoyed it ladies, missed a few of you and hope you'll be able to join us next time.  Not many of us had managed to read this month's book, but discussed  the film instead.  Personally i'm enjoying the read-it's just finding the time to sit down and read without falling asleep!! The majority who had seen the film or read the book before enjoyed the characters and didn't see the ending coming.  Having not finished it yet, I can't comment too much, hopefully one of my fellow ladies can add a comment on here to enlighten us.

We decided that we needed to re-focus the bookclub a little and get back into a routine-with summer long gone and holidays tucked away for another year, we've decided to re-visit our list of reading wishes.  For the month of October we've decided to stay away from the traditional 'thriller' and explore a contemporary fiction
'The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society' by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Brown

Synopis: It's 1946 and author Juliet Ashton can't think what to write next. Out of the blue, she receives a letter from Dawsey Adams of Guernsey - by chance, he's acquired a book that once belonged to her - and, spurred on by their mutual love of reading, they begin a correspondence. When Dawsey reveals that he is a member of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, her curiosity is piqued and it's not long before she begins to hear from other members. As letters fly back and forth with stories of life in Guernsey under the German Occupation, Juliet soon realizes that the society is every bit as extraordinary as its name.

Silly Season....let's hope it's over!

Well it's been a crazy amount of time since this blog was updated, by bad ladies and my many appologies! I've my head back in the game and am on the ball!  So July was a 'Free read' and I hope you all picked a good book or two.  I know I enjoyed learning about little boys and how they think!! (it's definatley helping!)  I'm so sorry I missed coming to the cinema for September's Book club, I hope you all had an enjoyable experience and are looking forward to getting stuck into the novel now.  For those who weren't aware, September's book club night was watching the new 'Jane Eyre' film.   From all acounts it was well worth the watch, i'm looking forward to catching up with that soon.  So it was decided that we all read Charlotte Bronte's: Jane Eyre for our October read.  Hope you enjoy re-visiting the characters and being warmed by the talents of a classic authour.

Much love xxx

MAYhanna JU ugly..! HAPPY BIRTHDAY LADIES!

Wow a whole year of book clubbing! Happy Birthday ladies! It's been a super year, I look forward to the next one.  As it was our birthday we decided to have a party-of sorts.  Leanne made the biggest chocolate cake-ever! (if you don't count the ones you get at sycamore farm that is)  Needless to say Lisa'a diet went out the window! (Calories don't count on birthdays-FACT!) :)

We decided to roll Mays book over into June as not many of us had finished it by bookclub night.... We all managed to finish it...well almost! :) We all found it quite a hard book to get going with, but once we'd got through the first few chapters it was a very enjoyable read.  We didn't find it VERY gripping, or a page turner, but nethertheless we all wanted to carry on reading to find out the conclusion...some even read the next book in the series just to quench our need to find out what happened!

It was a great night of much munching, lorra laughing and of course excessive chin wagging! Missed lovely Janet and Laura and hope that they can join us in July.

For July we've decided to have a free read, and give people a chance to catch up on past reads or pick up that book they've been meaning to read for a while.  We'll hopefully have a varied account of some good books in our next get together.  Enjoy... and lets hope there's plenty of sunshine!

April literary Adventures

What a lovely night we had last night girls! It was soooo nice to get together, almost all were able to make it- we missed you Janet, and hope you're well rested and able to join us next month.  Welcome to Laura, we hope you enjoy it with us.

March's read was an individual read based on 'true life events.  We had an array of books to discuss; from the rebuilding of life for a shattered Superman, to a little girl and her adventures of life in Africa. There were tales of missionaries on faraway Islands and some haunting accounts from the Holocaust.  All seemed to struggle to get through their book, finding it a much harder read than previous book club reads.  Some of us travelled on a roller-coaster of emotion as we followed the experience from start to finish.  Some were enlightened greatly and came to appreciate the person they were reading about so much more.  I certainly enjoyed hearing about other peoples experiences and am looking forward to 'biography' month nearer the end of the year.

April's read then was decided as

 'Uglies' by Scott Westerfield.

Synopis: Tally lives in a world where your sixteenth birthday brings aesthetic perfection: an operation which erases all your flaws, transforming you from an 'Ugly' into a 'Pretty'. She is on the eve of this important event, and cannot wait for her life to change. As well as guaranteeing supermodel looks, life as a Pretty seems to revolve around having a good time. But then she meets Shay, who is also fifteen - but with a very different outlook on life. Shay isn't sure she wants to be Pretty and plans to escape to a community in the forest - the Rusty Ruins - where Uglies go to escape ' turning'. Tally won't be persuaded to join her, as this would involve sacrificing everything she's ever wanted for a lot of uncertainty. When she is taken in for questioning on her birthday, however, Tally gets sent to the Ruins anyway - against her will. The authorities offer Tally the worst choice she could ever imagine: find her friend Shay and turn her in, or never turn Pretty at all. What she discovers in the Ruins reveals that there is nothing 'pretty' about the transformations...And the choice Tally makes will change her world forever.

March Madness...

...Well just busyness really....
Bookclub was small this month...we missed you ladies.  Lisa. Jess and myself enjoyed a quiet night discussing..erm part of the book! (Poor Lisa, for the first time ever didn't mange to fininsh in time..but hey her kids are just too cute to be mad). :)

We decided that it was an enjoyable read...and like the last one a very easy read.  It was an intriuging read, and you start off thinking that something is happening just to find out that you were completely wrong.  A few tears where shed, and emotions for some were very up and down.  A good conclusion and quite a happy one considering it's a Sparks.

For March we've decided to do an individual read around 'true life experiences'.  We look forward to hearing about your choice.

February's full of.....

TWITS!!!! hehe... Well we had another wonderful night! Thanks ladies and thanks to Janet for opening her home! (Leanne we missed you, and hope you can make it next month!)  Thanks to Robyn for making her b..e..a..u..tiful millionaire shortbread!!!..(AGAIN!!)

We all enjoyed reading 'The Twits'- some tried reading it to their children....Abe wasn't too impressed by it from Janet's account.  It was enjoyable for most to be tramsported back to their childhood memories of reading it the first time.....even if we didn't remember just how mean Mr and Mrs Twit were and how utterly brutal Roald Dahl is in his writing sometimes! All in all though, a quick read that brought a smile to one's face.

As February is the month of lurrrve we shall be reading a Nicolas Sparks book... we've changed it from the notebook, as previously decided though to 'The Choice'... so happy reading ladies!

'The Choice' by Nicolas Sparks

Synopis: Travis Parker has everything a man could want: a good job; loyal friends; his dream home in small-town North Carolina. In full pursuit of the good life, he believes that a serious relationship with a woman would only cramp his style. That is until Gabby Holland moves in next door. Despite Travis's attempts to be friendly, she seems to have a chip on her shoulder about him. But something compels Travis to get to know his new neighbour. His persistent efforts lead them both to make tough decisions, the consequences of which neither could have foreseen. The Choice confronts us with that most heart-wrenching question of all: how far would you go to keep the hope of love alive?

New Year... New booklist!

What a lovely night on Wednesday....we missed you Janet and Leanne...but very glad Lisa was able to make it after her very busy and exciting week! Robyn very kindly was hostess....and made some millionarie shortbread to die for!!! : )
Those who had read this months book which was 'Christmas Jars' by Jason F. Wright, thoroughly enjoyed it.  For a few it was the second time reading it, but it was just as enjoyable as the first.  We all loved the story concept and was warmed and inspired by the characters and their love for each other in their family.  One or two shed a few tears whilst reading and wished to be part of the famliy.

Other than that, we did a little planning and debated a new reading list... or catergories at least that we'd like to read from.  See our reading wish list page for full details and add your suggestions!

This month's book will be from our 'Children's Classic' category:
 'The Twits' by Roald Dahl
Synopsis: With filthy hair all over his face and horrid plots growing in his mind, Mr Twit is one of the nastiest people you'll ever meet and Mrs Twit is just as bad and even uglier! But they don't stop at tricking each other: neighbouring children and even the local birds are in danger, and that's where the Muggle-Wumps come in. This family of monkeys has had enough of the Twits' tricks and, with the help of the handsome Roly-Poly bird, they decide it's time for sweet revenge...
This is the tale of the Twits: Mr and Mrs Twit, an obnoxious couple who spend their lives trying to outdo each other in nastiness. But the Muggle-Wump monkeys and the Roly-Poly bird hatch an ingenious plan to give them just the ghastly surprise they deserve.
